adaptation of a certain scene from part 4. created in Opentoonz (Tahoma2D) over a couple days.
animatics are fun, I personally don’t have much desire to create a finished animation. but it’s pretty enjoyable to get the body language and movements down. may do more in the future.

mood music

I create a decent amount of music playlists for my own personal use for inspiration to get the mood of the comic how I want it, and have decided to share them. Feel free to click on the vibes link up top if this sounds interesting to you. At this point I’ve uploaded 8 of the over 20 playlists I have compiled, and will add more occasionally.

Song of the Motherland at Smallville Con!

Hutchinson, KS has a yearly comic con, of which I will be attending on Jun 18-19! I have no clue if any of you are even near the area but I might as well let you know. Feel free to drop by if you are!

More information can be found at https://www.hutchrec.com/smallvillefestival/ . I will be at booth 69 (nyuk). Seriously, that’s what they gave me.

People of the Wind on Amazon!

Great news. People of the Wind is now available on Amazon in both paperback and kindle versions! Glad to see my work finally out there in the great beyond. I will try to always keep the comic available to read for free on this site, but purchasing a copy definitely helps me out. It’s always better to have a print version anyway! New chapters will be released similarly as they are finished. Hopefully in the future I’ll make some sort of compendium once I get enough material.

If you are interested in buying a copy, either click the link at the top of the page or visit here. It really helps a lot to keep the site available for everyone. Please leave a review if you enjoyed it!

Time to put down Old Yeller

Went through and changed all the pages from B&W and yellow to B&W and gray.

I like the yellow. I really do. I feel it’s more unique for a comic, but gray just works better in more situations than yellow does. much easier to blend it with hatching techniques, and it just goes better with B&W in my opinion. Currently using a 30% gray for the majority, and occasionally 50% when I need some section to stand out a little more. The yellow I used before was around 50% value and was just too dark. if it made it lighter it was this weird unappealing tan color that I really didn’t like at all, and I didn’t really want to do blue or purple. I’m trying to figure out techniques and ways to save time with the comic, and a more open style is one of the better ways to do that at the moment. The yellow just seemed to conflict more and more with how my art direction is going. Thought about the gray for a while and decided to make the switch before I had to change even more pages. went back through and streamlined a few pages’ dialogue too to hopefully make things a little clearer. Let me tell you, it is very hard to keep a consistent pace and mood going with as many curveballs as life has been throwing me at the moment. Please bear with me. hopefully I won’t have to do another major overhaul with all the pages at least.

The good thing about an anthology series is that each chapter doesn’t necessarily have to look identical in style. time will tell on that front.

Progress on the progress

My intention is to use this blog to give not only updates on the site, but insights into my process and thoughts. Even if the site isn’t finished yet!

Time for the first one I guess?

Without spoiling anything, I can say that the story takes place in a setting more ancient than our times. I do a lot of historical research and want to show cultures outside my own mid-American one. For instance, most of the outfits of the country shown first are loosely based off the look of mid-asian regions.

I’m trying to actively avoid a lot of japanese and european aesthetics. Not because they’re bad, just overdone in my opinion. I feel like not many other regions get much of a spotlight, so hopefully I can help show some of the unique cultures out there I’ve come across in my own way.

The jist

Hey. I’m Cal, and this is my web comic. Or rather, it will be. I’m currently getting it ready. Come summertime or so, It’ll hopefully be up and running pretty good. I look forward to putting it up then, and I hope you will as well. 🙂

Take care, God bless.
